Hosting a Katrina Evacuee
Since Monday, we've been hosting a hurricane Katrina evacuee, from Tylertown in Mississippi. We don't know her name, but we alternate between calling her Tuesday and Blanche Dubois. She's a domesticated short-haired female cat that we are fostering through Pet Connect, Inc., a new animal rescue group in Potomac, Maryland. We picked up the little cat (she's about 7lb and finely-boned) on Monday night before the Dead Can Dance concert and kept her isolated from our other cat for 48 hours (a safety precaution for him, as well as allowing them to sniff each other before being introduced). She's not much of a talker, but she's young (probably 10 months old or so) and extremely curious. After having a couple of older cats around, it's a bit of a surprise to find out just how much a cat can explore and get around, not to mention having to teach a new cat about not getting on certain furniture. She also has her front claws, which we trimmed before letting her into the rest of the house. She'll be put up for adoption in a couple of weeks, and we'll probably take her to a couple of "events" so that people can meet her. She's been quite the friendly cat, immediately taking the prime sleep spot in the house (i.e., on J), and hasn't shown any bad habits other than the aforementioned lack of boundary understanding.

Update: We kept the name Blanche DuBois ("I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.") from A Streetcar Named Desire, since it seemed to fit a refugee from the south who'd lost everthing. We're working on her habit of 'play biting' but otherwise, she is sweet cat with her nose into everything. I found out today that she loves cheese, so I now know her treat of choice.
