Rock is a Young Person's Game?

J and I were discussing this little question over dinner last night: Has there ever been a popular music artist who didn't release their first recording until they were in their 40s? Or even 30s?

We couldn't come up with anyone. There's plenty of people who've managed to maintain a recording career well into their doddering years, but unlike in the book world, where an astonishing debut can occur quite late in life, popular music seems to be made for the young by the young.

Macy Gray was (barely) in her 30s when she released her first album.

Lamontagne was exactly 30 when his first album was released. So we've got a couple of just barely 30s, but they seem to be exceptions. 40s? Forget trying to start a popular music career.

This is being discussed on a musicians website, but they seem to find early 30s the limit too. See http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1696133 and http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1720465.
