Junking Junk Mail

One of the things I love to receive is mail, email or regular. But I mean mail that means something to me, not just unsolicited advertisements. It's bad enough in my email, which takes me time to clean through, but I really despise junk paper mail, which is just a waste of resources: my time, the postman's time, the printing process, the gas it takes to move it around, etc.

This month at the Carbon Conscious Consumer they are encouraging people to pledge to reduce their junk mail. Pledging is easy, but how do you do it? They've got some free forms that you can print and mail (I know, I know, more paper, but the idea is that you do this, and you get less). They also provide some more involved (and costly) tips.

Click the image below to get started. They're having a contest, but that's secondary to me as the hope that I will get less junk in my mail box (especially credit cards--hey, banks, I've got USAA, and don't need your crappy usurious credit).

The three major credit agencies have a combined system for opting out of pre-screening which prevents all the pre-approved credit card junk mail.

Privacy freaks need a lot of convincing, but I did this several years ago and now all I get in the mail is stuff from the banks with which I already do business - so it works:
