The Semiotics Debut

It was a hot and muggy Saturday afternoon, and by four o'clock there were only a few people who had stepped through the backyard gate at the Engel-Cox residence to take advantage of the freshly iced keg of Bass Ale and the sound check for The Semiotics. But by ten minutes after six, the crowd had grown into more than 30 people and the band "took the stage" as the strains of "A Salty Salute" died out on the iPod.

The Semiotics Debut Concert

A few bars into their opening number, "Jack of Legs," they stopped because it was obvious that the heat and humidity had done a number on the tuning of the guitars, so rather than force the audience to suffer out-of-tune notes, they stopped, re-tuned, and forced the audience to hear the beginning of "Jack" once again. After the end of that song, the drummer jumped up and turned on the recording device, so there is a record of everything following the end of the opening number.

The set went fairly well, although two songs didn't come off quite so well to our satisfaction, due to either their newness (the instrumental "The Closer") or last minute corrections to the piece (fixed chords in "Underwater Explosions"). The strongest songs were probably "Editors" or the jamming cover of "Watching the Detectives." The audience provided support throughout, even sympathy applause during the Guided by Voices train wreck.

The Appreciative Crowd

Unofficial head count stands at 41. There's extent video along with the mp3s mentioned before, which we hope to make available online at some time.
