If You Plan to Boycott, Do It Right

There's a meme going around in email and gossip that is calling for people to protest rising gas prices by not going to the pump on May 15. Uhm, people, a one day boycott won't do you any good. You want to send a message? Don't freakin' drive on May 15. Prices will drop if there's no demand. If you keep driving your gas-guzzler, it doesn't matter to the gas/oil barons which day you end up filling your tank.

Boycotts only work if they actually hurt the company you're boycotting, typically in their bottom line. The only thing not filling up at the pump on the 15th is likely to do is make lines for the pump on the 16th slightly longer.

That one's been going around for a few years now. I don't even think the ExxposeExxon efforts, which had a lot of organization and support behind them (Sierra Club, et al.) amounted to much.

I think the main body of support for this meme are the people who are convinced the A-rab what owns the gas station on the corner is getting rich on the sales $3.00 gas.
