Upcoming Concerts

I've got tickets for two upcoming shows, both by fellows named Bob. The first is Bob Pollard, playing at the Sonar in Baltimore. Pollard is the ex-leader of Guided by Voices, and is one of those older musicians who actually acts his age (unlike, say, septuagenarians Jagger and Richards). I was never a Guided by Voices fan, but my buddy Cutter's been sharing some Pollard solo stuff with me and I like it lots better. Sometimes a song improves by being only two minutes long.

The other Bob show is Bob Schneider at the State Theater in Falls Church. I've slowly become a big fan of Schneider, whose back catalog is a mixture of sincere ballads, hard rock, and the occasional "I bet you won't play this song on the radio." He's a little intense at times, but passion sometimes makes for a great concert. Some of the stuff I've heard by him has been live or "almost-live" (i.e., one take in the studio) and its some of the better music I've heard in years (although J just termed it as a throwback to the 70s).

The price was right for both shows, as they were less than $20 per ticket. Concert reports forthcoming.

"Sometimes a song improves by being only two minutes long."

Actually, Guided by Voices were known for their amazingly short songs. Some of them (and ones that were regularly performed live, mind you) clocked in anywhere from 17 sec. to just under 1:00. Economy was never a problem for them. (Remind me to play "Hit" for you.) They were the only band I knew that could play a two-hour concert consisting of 50-70 songs.

But your point is well-taken about a change between GBV and Pollard solo. With GBV there had to be an opaque DIY mystique, preferably recorded lo-fi. In his solo work, Pollard has shed all shame of his pure pop leanings, and the result is, as you say, pretty cool.

Can't wait for this show!!!
