Fifteen RPG Questions

Been meaning to get to this one for awhile: a list of 15 questions about your personal interaction with RPGs, as posted by the 20by20 room:

  1. What is the first RPG you ever played?
Dungeons and Dragons, the blue boxed set. I can't remember how it came to be in my possession. It must have been around 1980, as I remember playing it as a freshman in high school. According to my best friend in high school, he actually hated the game but only played it because the rest of us did. I always remembered him as the best player, likely because he didn't get so involved in protecting his character and often thought outside the module.
  2. What RPG do you currently play most often?
We just completed a couple of months (weekly play) of d20 Modern, detailed as Wings of Icarus over on glEN World. I'm a little iffy on the system, as it has some of the same drawbacks of Dungeons and Dragons in its most recent incarnation, in that it oftentimes tries to push you into roll-play rather than role play. I'm not against roll-play (in fact, in a recent meta discussion about the game, I agreed with the others that we needed more rolling), but I dislike being forced into it.
  3. What is the best system you’ve played?
I don't know if it's the best, but the one I've enjoyed the most is the White Wolf system, which I've encountered as both a Dark Age vampire and a Mage. I like the imaginative priciple behind this system, where it encourages you to think about what your character wants to do before you try to figure out what the mechanic for deciding whether or not your character succeeds (and how well he or she succeeds).
  4. What is the best system you’ve run?
I've only run Deadlands and D&D recently, and I've got issues with both. No award.
  5. Would you consider yourself an: Elitist/ Min-Maxer/ Rules Lawyer?
I'm definitely not a Min-Maxer or a Rules Lawyer, so that must mean that I'm an Elitist, by process of elmination. hoi polloi>
  6. If you could recommend a new RPG which would you recommend? Why?
No award here, either. It really depends on what you want to play.
  7. How often do you play?
Weekly, although we're about to take a break as GM duties shift to me, and I'm not ready. We'll probably pull out Munchkin or some other card or board game to fill the spot for a couple of weeks.
  8. What sort of characters do you play? Leader? Follower? Comic Relief? Roll-Player/ Role-Player?
I'm strongly in the role camp, and try to come up with a character that I can inhabit. That is, one that has some kind of personality quirks or tics that I can make my own that are not necessarily my own. In recent games, I seem to have taken on a leadership role after awhile (a reflection of my age in comparison to others?), although I was happy to forego that role in the Vampire Dark Ages in favor of a very scary sycophant.
  9. What is your favorite Genre for RPGs?
I find fantasy the easiest to get into, but that fantasy can be the horror of vampires in the dark ages as much as some kind of generic elves and dwarves thing.
  10. What Genres have you played in?
Fantasy (Forgotten Realms), Weird West (Deadlands), Horror (Call of Cthulhu, Vampire: Dark Ages, Mage), Action-Adventure (d20 Modern)
  11. Do you prefer to play or GM? Do you do both?
Play, simply because it is less work. GMing is tough. It's worthwhile, but it's a lot of work. I GM mainly to give Matt, who's been the regular GM, a well-deserved break from it.
  12. Do you like religion in your games?
As in life, as long as its appropriate.
  13. Do you have taboo subjects in your games or is everything “fair game"?
Luckily for us, this hasn't been an issue. I remember some uncomfortableness that centered around a male playing a female character who was then role-playing flirting with a male playing a male character. That's one of those kinds of instances that works okay if everyone is comfortable with each other, but can also backfire if people don't know each other.
  14. Have you developed your own RPG before?
No, and I wouldn't want to. Setting, sure. An entire system? No, thanks.
  15. Have you ever been published in the Gaming Industry? If so...what?
    Not yet.
