Moderation in Everything

In my day job, I'm the online community coordinator for a fairly large non-profit association of health care professionals. I spend a large part of my day on the association web site reading messages posted by our members to see if they need assistance from myself or other office staff, as well as working on developing new tools and opportunities for our members to connect to each other. When I was hired, there were a number of "virtual community" experts like myself in the working world, but the implosion of the dot.coms, as well as the general downturn in the economy, pulled the plug on what had been a forward-looking social experiment in communication.

The tide may have turned, because I've seen several new job postings recently in the field. Part of it may be that the Weblog, especially as implemented by such diverse places as slashdot and the Howard Dean campaign, in combination with the built-in feedback forums are showing people that community doesn't have to be simply a free-form discussion board, but can support other models.

In that vein, I'm happy to see a new Weblog focused on the management of online community called Everything in Moderation. It looks like a nice beginning and one that I immediately added to my blogroll. (Original link found via Medley.)

I checked out this site, and found it valuable enough to bookmark immediately. Many thanks for the tip!

I used to administrate a large sports message board community... (FanHome.com -- it had more than 40 thousand members at it's height: http://web.archive.org/web/20020529175419/http://forums.fanhome.com/ to see proof). I haven't had anyone express any interest in that administrative capacity I had in the site even though I was overseeing so damned much with the moderators and users.

I'll have to check out that site... That seems like something very interesting
