Another One Blogs the Smog

I wrote a couple of weeks ago during the comment spam debacle that my wife had pointed her graduate school advisor to my blog to show off the software (where, unfortunately, he was greeted with a note on the side about the opportunity to increase his penis size). Luckily, my wife is a better salesperson than the spammers, and she was able to convince him that the blog software would actually work quite well for an idea that they were working on to cover air quality issues in the nation by using NASA satellite imagery, ground based lidar, EPA monitoring networks, and other monitors.

So, please welcome to the blogosphere, The View from Above, daily reporting about the visible state of the nation. Yesterday's image (click the picture for a larger picture) of the fires in California are pretty stunning, especially when you consider the scale. I heard on NPR this morning that California officials had encouraged people to minimize aerobic activities because of the danger of smoke inhalation, and it's easy to see why in this photo.

It's more than just do not exercise, these fires have shut down airports and highways. They're stunning... and the smoke will be coming east eventually.
