The Fallen Tower (Mage)

We played a four player game of "Mage: the Ascension" today with characters who had yet to be awakened. It was interesting going from the D&D 3rd edition rules to the White Wolf "storyteller" system. D&D is much more rules- and dice-intensive, where every action seems to hang on how well you do with rolling the dice, wherease the storyteller system is much more open--more "cinematic" as one player put it--where the dice determine success or failure, but not necessarily the actions one can take.

It was also strange to be playing a game where one had no "extra" powers. The only thing my character really had going for him was the ability to read four different languages and a modicrum of personal charisma. Without having the crutch of supernatural ability, I was often left trying to really figure out the best course of action given an incredibly limited ability set--instead of fighting back against the fellow shooting a gun at me, I rush for the light switch to plunge the room into darkness. I attempted to manipulate people by my words.

Of course, the joy we see in this type of system is due in some part to having played the D&D system for so long that you overcompensate. They are likely best played together, but I have to admit that today's game was one of the better RPG sessions I've been a part of in some time.
