Two in Wheaton
After having to spend two hours in line at the Georgetown office of the District's Department of Motor Vehicles to renew our driver's licenses, we were ready to do a couple of caches. We thought that we would do the Arlington Book Cache, but no parking on Glebe, and then we thought we'd do Mohican Valley, and the rain came. Decided to go home, have a bite to eat, feed the cats, and get some work done.
Around 5pm, we headed out to Wheaton Regional Park where there were a number caches, including the eponymous one. We parked at the Train Station then began our hike. Didn't go very far before we stopped to admire the flock of goldfinches that were feasting on the thistles next to the train tracks. It was hard to ignore the bright yellow birds, with black underbellies, as they flitted from bush to tree to bush. Eventually we moved on.
Following Mary Jane, we took off into the woods, then realized we were off the track, and took off through the woods a couple of times. When we finally found the cache (and it was I who found the cache this time, ha!), we realized that we could have simply stayed on the main path. That's caching for you! This one wasn't really that far off the cache. In fact, as we were taking a picture, a woman came by not 20 feet from us walking her dog. We took a Hobos button and left an ASHA calculator and teacher's union keychain.
It still was light enough to go towards another cache, and the closest was the Happy Wanderer, about a mile away. It ended up being a nice hike by a little pond then through the woods on a trail by a high (deer?) fence. The wanderer proved to be a "microcache" that was hidden very, very well (in fact, we had to clue in to the title before realizing where we needed to be looking). Couldn't leave anything there but a note, which we did on the soggy bits of paper that were left.
Thought about doing one more cache, but by then it was getting dark and we still needed to run by the Fresh Fields for dinner. Maybe tomorrow.
