Country impressions
Up at 8am to move the car and picked up luggage that had arrived by taxi the night before. Breakfast was croissants and bread with Appenzeller and soft cheese. Jill drank tea while I had Aqui (a natural mineral water).
We drove to the chocolate factory that we had seen the day before--but they only did tours on Wednesday through Friday. I wanted to go to Winterthur--museums there were supposed to be good, but Jill found that they were closed on Monday as well.
We went to St. Gallen through the Scenic route--both in Countryside and through the town, havin lots of trouble finding the Cathedral. Parking in town was 5 fr. for 3.5 hours. Once found, the Cathedral was one of the brightest I had been in: well lighted, painted white on the inside, and very, very clean.
Visited the Abbey library (entrance fee 7 Fr. ), full of illuminated manuscripts including inccubula. Had to put slippers on to enter the room due to wooden inlaid floor that continually creaked, but that sound was nothing to the crying child. Visited the Protestant Church, with no statuary, a geometric pattern on the walls, and one detailed stained glass of the Last Supper. Climbed the bell tower and looked over the city, including the geometric pattern of the roof.
Bought a couple of ice creams from a street vendor, a better driving map Of Switzerland, and changed a traveller's check.
Visited the demonstration factory for the Appenzeller cheese--discovered that real Swiss cheese is much tastier than its bland, American cousin. (Snack was cheese and mineral water). Stopped and climbed the footpath to the Wanderberg castle (not open, but able to walk in courtyard--neat sundial). Drove up small road looking for isolated guest house. Insted found ski lift area and grungy biker types at a hotel along the way. Settled for small place south of Buchs. 90 fr. for a room with private shower. Hotel Krone Truebbach.
Ate at Hotel Drei Köenige in Sevelen. Had cream of mushroom soup and mixed salad (Jill had a french onion soup and salad and I had a Coupe Romanov which was ice cream, strawberries, and cream. (Total 62.00).
Everybody seems to be making hay. Grass hay, flipped and collected in plastic bags or by truck. And there are lots of dairy cows with bells.
