In line for the Rio Tempisque bridge, about 9 cars back
We stepped out of the car to get some Lifts (lemon-lime
soft drink here). The soda also had a huge pile of coconuts. Glen got
one and they chopped off the husk and dug a little hole for a straw
for the milk. I tried it and it does not have much taste, but it is
refreshing.
The way here was enlivened by a pseudo-flat tire. Lucky for us some Ticas in a car passing us shouted and pointed. We stopped and could see one tire was low with a nail in it. We drove on to Nicoya where they fixed it for about the price of two sodas (300 colones).
Now, we wait for the ferry to take us from the Nicoya peninsula to the mainland (we missed the 11:30 ferry, now we wait for the 12:30).
Ferry just pulled up, so I'm out of the shade and back in the car.
This place, as well as a few others we've seen, reveals another dichotomy of Costa Rica. While most Ticos/Ticas seem very conservation minded about the parks and land, this area is covered with litter-plastic, paper, cigarette packages, etc. The gas station where we got a jump-start had a mini-toxic waste dump behind it, complete with oil bottles, cans, oil soaked soil, plus anti-freeze and other car fluids, I am sure.
Just as the ecology movement is being taught in U.S. schools, may be an anti-pollution/littering campaign would be good for Costa Rica. But perhaps I am imposing my own values. Still, the oil sheened water from the second service station that ran right into a stream was heart wrenching.
